Frequently asked questions
How do I look up an NPI number by state?
Choose a state below to open its provider hub, then browse by specialty and city or search within that state. NPI numbers are federal, so every state hub draws on the same CMS NPPES data.
Are NPI numbers issued by each state?
No. NPIs are issued nationally by CMS, not by individual states. A state hub simply filters the national registry to providers with a practice location in that state.
How many providers are in each state?
The count next to each state is the number of providers and organizations in our latest NPPES snapshot with a practice address there.
